Welcome to the September edition of The Brush Up, your monthly recap of the ADSO’s advocacy efforts, committee updates and member news.
This month, ADSO hosted its DC Fly-In, a day where ADSO members met with legislators and pundits, and spent time with Dr. Natalia Chalmers, Chief Dental Officer for CMS. The Fly-In concluded with Hill visits with key congressional leaders. Later this month, the ADSO team will meet with DSO clinicians in Raleigh to discuss advocacy initiatives for the 2023 legislative session.
ADSO also is collaborating with ADA leadership to unify and elevate dentistry. Emmet Scott and I hosted a joint webinar with ADA executive director Ray Cohlmia and ADA president Cesar Sabates to discuss workforce issues, medical-dental integration, trends in dental consumerism, and ways the two organizations can work together to address issues in dentistry. Look for information about how to access the webinar coming soon.
We’re excited to introduce the 2023 ADSO Summit theme – Uniting Dentistry – which complements our efforts to collaborate and partner with dental organizations across the spectrum.
We hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter. Please don’t hesitate to contact any of the ADSO team with thoughts, ideas, and questions.
Last month, the ADSO Government Relations team was on the road showcasing two of our member’s practice locations to lawmakers from Colorado and Nevada. Site visits are a unique opportunity to educate lawmakers on the DSO practice model and the remarkable ways DSO practices around the nation provide crucial oral health care to vulnerable populations.
Gray McGinnis participated in a site visit at Hero Practice Services (HPS) in Colorado. Joining Gray were HPS Director of Payer Relations and Community Outreach, Janelle Shumaker, and Colorado State Representative Monica Duran. Along with a tour, Representative Duran learned more about the DSO practice model and the innovative ways DSOs, like HPS, can address access issues for her pediatric constituents.
In Nevada, Matt Steele visited a Pacific Dental Services location in Las Vegas with Nevada Assemblywoman Rochelle Nguyen. The visit was an opportunity to showcase the DSO model and highlight the cutting-edge, comprehensive care at Sahara Modern Dentistry. If you would like to host a lawmaker site visit, please contact Matt Steele at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Over the course of September, the ADSO team attended RLCC in Indianapolis, DGA in Jersey City, facilitated a Washington DC fly-in with members of Congress, and is slated to be at RGA in Sea Island. At these meetings, ADSO staff and members met with key state as well as national lawmakers to discuss our the organization’s policy and regulatory interests.
ADA, Partners Take Steps to Achieve Greater Licensure Portability for Dentists
ADA | September 8, 2022
Improved licensure portability for dentists and dental hygienists is closer than ever, as the American Dental Association continues to work with other agencies to make it a reality. “Licensure is a process all dentists must go through at least once in their professional lives to practice dentistry. In the U.S., licensure requirements vary state by state,” said Donna Thomas-Moses, D.M.D., chair of the ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure. “If dentists move across state lines or practice in a state other than where they earned their dental degree, they could face significant burdens on their finances and time as they obtain a new state license.”
ADA Calls on Dentists, Dental Students to Press Congress on Student Loan Reform
ADA | September 8, 2022
The ADA has posted a new video featuring new dentists speaking out on student debt and also sent out a Sept. 7 grassroots alert to members on the issue. Both communications pieces urge dentists and dental students nationwide to contact their members of Congress in support of support student loan reform. In the video, Jon Vogel, D.D.S., a 2018 graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry, said paying back his loans had a “significant impact” on every single decision in his life, from where he decided to live and practice to giving back to his community. “Starting dental school, the moment that you sign your loan, interest starts accumulating,” Dr. Vogel said. “Upon graduation, I had already accumulated over $30,000 in just interest debt. We have to start doing something, and [Congress has] to take action instead of just talking about it.”
HPI Poll: Insurance Reimbursement Not Keeping Up with Increased Practice Operating Costs
ADA | September 8, 2022
Most U.S. dental practices have experienced increased operating costs, but insurance reimbursement has not increased accordingly, say dentists responding to the latest wave of the ADA Health Policy Institute’s Economic Outlook and Emerging Issues in Dentistry poll. Most of the roughly 1,200 practicing dentists who responded to the poll Aug. 16-20 reported increased prices across the board by expense category, including supplies and materials, staff wages and lab fees. Nearly one-third of dentists (31%) indicated that personal protective equipment prices have increased by more than 20 percent. Roughly 1 in 4 dentists (26%) indicated that supplies and materials prices went up by at least 20% in the past year.

DSO members (excluding international and not-for-profit DSO members) received a notice about upcoming changes in ADSO membership fees for 2023 which has been designed to flatten the increases that members at several revenue levels currently experience as they grow; it is not a dues increase. The change marks an important milestone for ADSO, positioning us to strategically grow the membership, increase revenue from new membership and create new value-added membership programs. Visit our FAQs here and recording here for more information. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you need your membership code to access any of our materials. DSO members should expect to receive information on 2023 membership renewal next steps later this month.
IP Dues Restructure
With the input from the Membership Committee and Industry Partner Advisory Council (IPAC) the ADSO has developed an enhanced tiered-membership structure for Industry Partners. Starting with 2023 membership renewals, all Industry Partners will see more value added to their basic membership benefits, and companies that choose to opt for more visibility and opportunities to connect with DSO members, will have the opportunity to do so. Next month, the 2023 Industry Partner Membership and Media Kit will be shared with current members along with exclusive early access to Summit sponsorship and exhibit opportunities.
The ADSO Study Club Program is designed to enhance the associations value as a place where DSO executive team members come to connect with their peers and build knowledge in their areas of focus. Oral Health Tips and Resources for Patients with I/DD and Their Caregivers
Good oral health makes a significant difference in an individual’s quality of life and overall health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) face significant barriers to accessing oral health care. With or without dental benefits, many also experience challenges getting to the dentist, verbally communicating oral pain or finding a dentist with the knowledge and capabilities to care for their needs. DentaQuest’s case management and outreach teams help bridge those gaps and provide tips and resources for families and caregivers to assist patients with I/DD in feeling comfortable with dental care. ADSO member organizations support a practice environment where dentists have the ability to choose the administrative services which best allows them to focus on patients, expand access to quality dental care and improve the oral health of their communities.
